Porsche Is Selling New Old Stock Crankcases for 1984-1998 911s! Porsche had a small stock of old crankcase blanks in storage, and its Classic department wanted to mill them into working components, but the original plans were illegible. So, they sat. But recently, Porsche Motorsport began making new crankcases for the 962 Group C car, a fixture on the historic-racing scene. Well, someone realized that the 962 crankcase and the 911 crankcase were almost identical. The Motorsp...ort department shared its plans with the Classic department, and a local company got to work actually machining the old blanks. You can order three different versions of this crankcase, which fit seven different 911 variants: The first can be used in any 1984-1989 Carrera or Turbo; The second is good for the 1992-1993 964 Turbo 3.3-liter The third is good for both the 964- and 993-generation Carrera, plus the 964 Turbo 3.6 and the 993 Turbo. Essentially, this crankcase works for most every 911 built from 1984 to 1998, save for ultra-rare 3.8-liter variants of the 964 and 993. Additionally, Porsche Classic is now selling entirely new crankcases and complete engines for the 962 C. SO, call your Porsche Dealer, because Porsche only has around 100 of these blanks, and once they're gone, that's it.
Electric Cobra Jet 1400 Faces Off Against Its Fossil Fuel Twin. Ford promised that the Cobra Jet 1400 would produce "over 1,400 horsepower," and that promise was delivered with Ford claiming a peak power output of 1,502 hp. Ford says that its four-motor setup allowed the Cobra Jet 1400 to achieve a quarter-mile time of 8.27 seconds at 168 mph in private testing, but this exhibition race at Indy would be the car's first run in front of the public, and it didn't disappoint.
Worksport, a manufacturer of pickup-truck accessories, plans to launch a pickup-bed cover with built-in solar panels. The Terravis system will allow users to run power tools and other appliances even when they're far from the grid. Worksport says its system will eventually be able to add range to electric pickups from companies like Rivian, Bollinger, and Ford. The Terravis system will fit traditional gas-powered trucks from roughly the 2010 model year forward, the company ...says. Worksport also plans to develop models for upcoming electric pickups from Rivian, GM, Ford, Bollinger, and others, claiming the system will be able to add range to hybrid and electric trucks, once they become available. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, known for setting overly optimistic goals, said that a solar-panel system on their Cybertruck would generate somewhere around 15 miles of range per day. Hyundai says that the solar roof on its new Sonata Hybrid, which appears to be much smaller than Worksport's setup, could provide two miles of range per day. The Terravis system is still in the design and funding phase, and Worksport expects to launch the product "within 12-24 months of funding."
The 2021 Ram 1500 TRX Launch Edition Sold Out in Just Three Hours! The 702-horsepower 1500 TRX pickup sold out in three hours on August 20th! Complete with a supercharged V-8 Hellcat engine, a desert-running suspension, and a set of massive 35-inch mud-terrain tires, it's set to be the de-facto F-150 Raptor killer. Ram announced the truck's Launch Edition, of which 702 units will be built, sold out in around three hours.... The Launch Edition TRX is approximately $20,000 more expensive than the base model TRX, with a starting price of $92,010, including destination. For all of that extra cash, you got a special Anvil Gray paint job, bespoke badging, and the truck's Level 2 equipment group as standard, which includes carbon interior trim, a heads-up display, beadlock-capable wheels, a 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and a dual-pane panoramic sunroof. Ram said that production of the Launch Edition TRX will begin in the early fourth quarter of 2020, so those who reserved a truck shouldn't have to wait long.
Chevy Camaro Being Discontinued After 2023? No 7th Gen Platform Being Planned? The current sixth-gen Camaro is on GM's Alpha platform shared by the Cadillac ATS, and CTS. Those two have recently been replaced by the CT4 and CT5, which are on an updated version of Alpha, known as Alpha 2. So, that sounded like just the thing to build a seventh-gen Camaro on, but apparently not. The latest reports indicate the current Camaro is safe until 2023, meaning there's still plenty ...of time for new variants, such as a new Z/28 (still 6th Generation). Basically, GM seems to be re-thinking its overall Camaro strategy in light of dwindling sales. It would not be the first time either, due to poor sales. After the fourth-gen car's life ended in 2002, Chevy didn't produce a Camaro until 2009 for the 2010 model year. That version of the Camaro sold extremely well, consistently logging more than 80,000 cars per year and became a bit of a modern pop culture icon thanks to its starring role as "Bumblebee" in the Transformers movies. Meanwhile, Ford and Dodge have no intention of eliminating the Mustang and Challenger. Both are due for major changes in the relatively near future. The Mustang's next big update will be in 2021. So, this is pretty terrible news for Chevrolet and Camaro fans, but don’t say goodbye to the Camaro just yet. If the base C8 Corvette is more expensive than the C7, it may drive some buyers to go with the less-expensive Camaro, and that could help Camaro sales. So, if Camaro sales improve enough during the first few years of the C8, General Motors could be more interested in moving forward with a 7th generation car, thus could be saved prior to the 2023 end date.
